The new deputy of Vienna, Angelo, who “scarce confesses that his blood flows,” is tested as a ruler, while the disguised Duke takes care of his “dark deeds darkly answered.” Meanwhile, the novitiate Isabella begs Angelo to save the life of her brother, Claudio, who’s about to be executed under a merciless law during the deputy’s ruthless regime. But his confrontation with Isabella’s earnest and vibrant innocence gets Angelo’s blood flowing strong and sudden. He offers this “fair maid” a startling proposal. Now what will become of Isabella? Shakespeare’s “problem” play explores the fine lines that sometimes separate extremes like justice and self-interest, mercy and coercion, comedy and tragedy.
